O’ Brien’s Wake

I was at a funeral over in Ballyfermot. Johnner O’ Brien’s brother took a heart attack. I met Johnner outside the church after an extended service. I was doing my best to console him. After a prolonged silence he said, “That’s it! I’m giving up the drink. And the smokes. He had a weak heart, the brother. That’s what killed him, you know? They say it’s in the family too.” Trying to be upbeat I said, “Good on you, Johnner.”

There was a soft rain and his sister came over to share her umbrella. The three of us were huddled underneath with our heads pushed close together. I whispered to her, trying to sound respectful, “Isn’t it great Johnner’s going to give up the smokes and the drink?” She looked at Johnner and snapped, “You shouldn’t be givin’ anyting up!” A rapid verbal table tennis match ensued “Why is dat?” asked Johnner. “Because you’re just about t’ bury yer brother!” said she.

He volleyed back, “Wot should I be doin’ den?” She returned, “Gettin’ ready t’ ‘wake’ Johnner for starters!”

He paused for thought – I could see the creamy black pints with white collars on them in a thought bubble over his head. He conceded to her “You’re right, sister. Der’s time enough for all dat!”

Dub logic. You can’t beat it!
